The guide · Vézère and Dordogne
Which canoe trip to choose?
Six routes, two rivers, from 1h30 to a full day. Here is how we answer when we are asked at the base: by the time you have, by the children's age, by the weather, and by whether you want to swim.
First question
How much time do you have?
An hour and a half
Le Bugue → Limeuil, 7 km on the Vézère, €19, the only route rated easy. Or Port Muzart → Limeuil, 9 km on the Dordogne, €17, with the Le Buisson beach after thirty minutes of paddling.
Half a day
Campagne → Limeuil, 10 km of shaded Vézère in 2h, €20. Siorac → Limeuil, 14 km of Dordogne in 2h30 through a nature reserve, €19. Les Eyzies → Le Bugue, 13 km of Vézère in 3h with the village, the waterfall and the cliffs, €21.
The whole day
Les Eyzies → Limeuil, 18 km of Vézère in about 4h30, €23. The canoe is hired for the day: a stop at the Guinguette in Le Bugue halfway, beaches, a picnic, and the finish at the confluence.
In every case, add the briefing and the minibus ride to the start: allow 3 to 4 hours in total for a route advertised as two hours on the water.
Second question
Who are you going with?
Children aged 5 to 8
Le Bugue → Limeuil: short, easy, and a beach at the finish to end up in the water. Children under 12 pay half price, and we have life jackets in every size. Being able to swim remains mandatory.
A family after a proper outing
Siorac → Limeuil, the family route on the Dordogne: wild beaches, islets for a picnic, swans and herons, at your own pace. The only rule is to be back at the Limeuil base by 6pm.
Adults who want distance
Les Eyzies → Limeuil, the full day on the Vézère, or Les Eyzies → Le Bugue if you prefer to be back in three hours. And for two days, the trip from Montignac, 41 km.
Third question
Vézère or Dordogne?
The Vézère is narrow, wild and shaded: limestone cliffs, tunnels of greenery, a waterfall. It is the river for very hot days and nature lovers. Four of our routes run down it, from Les Eyzies, Campagne or Le Bugue.
The Dordogne is wider and brighter, with big beaches and a nature reserve between Siorac and Limeuil. Two routes start on it, from Siorac or Port Muzart, and finish at the port of Limeuil.
From Limeuil you choose one or the other: it is the only place in Périgord where the two rivers meet below a canoe base.
